We are a private greyhound rescue group in Melbourne passionate about rescuing and re-homing greyhounds.
Greyhounds are very gentle dogs but unfortunately the racing industry breeds far too many every year. they are exploited and mistreated by the racing industry which only has use for them while they run profitably.
If the greyhound is not profitable it is most likely killed. It is a sad fact that only a fraction of the approximate 22,000 greyhounds bred each year is alive to be re-homed.
Some people ask “what’s wrong with that?” but we clearly see how wrong this behavior is and we wish our tax money would not go towards racing industry subsidies.
We rescue and rehabilitate as many greyhounds as possible but the sheer number of unwanted greyhounds is overwhelming and makes it impossible to save them all.
There are thousands of greyhounds in need of a home. Thousands are euthanised. Thousands disappear every year.
We celebrate the ones we can save and for those greyhounds lucky enough to make it to Kay’s Greys, their lives are changed forever.
We rehabilitate our greyhounds in foster care and find loving and permanent homes. We find that all greyhounds respond very well to their training and adapt easily to pet life.
No greyhound in our care is kept in kennels. They are all looked after by foster carers. That way our greyhounds are used to family living and in many cases used to living with other dogs, cats and children.
By fostering all our greyhounds we are best able to test if a greyhound is cat and child friendly and assess his/her character thoroughly to find a suitable permanent home.
It is very important to match a dog to the right environment so that both the dog and the new owners are happy.
Every dog is different and we will match a greyhound with its new home based on character compatibility and not size, color or prettiness.
Kay’s Greys is also here to support the people who have adopted a greyhound from other organizations. For those who adopt from us, we never say goodbye for good and want to keep in touch with all the lovely people and dogs that cross our path.
If you would like to get involved please contact us for a chat. Helping hands are always welcome and there is a variety of task which need doing on a daily basis. Whether you are good at fundraising or have some time to help us look after the dogs please get in touch.
