We urgently need new foster carers in Melbourne and surrounding areas
We are always looking for foster carers to help us cope with the large amount of greyhounds in need of a temporary home. Amazing Greys has no kennels and relies on a network of foster families to open their homes and hearts to a hound in need.
What does fostering mean?
Fostering saves lives. If a greyhound is surrendered into our care,we need a foster home to keep the dog safe. You are helping a homeless, often scared and confused kennel dog transition to a new life as a pet. Our foster carers treat their foster dog as if it were their own and provide food,a warm and soft bed and regular walks. Our greyhounds must be able to sleep inside at night and you need a fully fenced yard for security.
Does it cost money?
All vet expenses are covered by us but we may need your help to transport the greyhound to the vet for health check ups. Most of our foster families pay for the food of their foster greyhound but if you need help with that,we are happy to provide the food. All bedding, collars, leads, bowls, coats, toys and ID tags are supplied by us. You are welcome to buy your own if you like too.
How long do you foster a greyhound?
The time in foster care really depends on the individual greyhound. Female and blue, fawn or brindle greyhounds often get adopted before large, male black greyhounds. Puppies get adopted pretty much immediately too so the time of fostering really depends on the greyhound. Seasonality can also play a role and we generally have more adoption inquiries during warmer months and during school holidays.
What if I need help?
Amazing Greys has volunteers across all Melbourne suburbs and we are happy to help with any questions and provide tips. Previous experience is not necessary and you will have the support of our foster and volunteer network of 130+ people via Facebook and phone. We will guide you through any issues (if any) and we are always contactable and able to come over for a visit.
How do I get involved?
If you decide you want tofoster a greyhound, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to get the ball rolling.
We will ask you to fill in our foster carer application form (we will email it to you) as a first step. Once we have it back, one of our amazing volunteers will make a time with you to meet at your place for a face to face chat and homecheck. We just want to make sure that your home is suitable and the fences are high enough and in good condition.
Once that is all done,we will introduce you to your foster dog. In an ideal world, the greyhound is already de-sexed,vaccinated and wormed. But sometimes we move an entire greyhound into foster care. All vet work will be carried out within a few days of moving in though and you don’t have to pay for anything. We just may need your help with transporting the greyhound to the vet.
We provide guidance to help settle in your foster dog and how to introduce him/her to your family including any other dogs or pets. You can call us or email any questions you have and we will help you each step of the way.
