Greyhound Behaviour- Humping

Why does my dog hump other dogs?

Mounting or humping carries a strong sexual connotation which can make it awkward when your dog displays this behaviour. But it is completely normal and there is nothing to be ashamed of.

It is not about dominance. Humping ≠ hierarchy. It’s communication, arousal, or emotion — not a power play.

Dogs mount for lots of reasons:

  • Excitement

  • Stress relief

  • Excitement

  • Social awkwardness

  • Self soothing

  • Learned behaviour

  • Sexual behaviour, even if your dog is de-sexed

What do you do when your dog is mounting?

  • Observe the context

  • Redirect gently if needed

  • Don’t punish your dog
