Why we teach our greyhounds with food
Food is a primary reinforcer for all animals including your dog. We use it to teach our greyhounds new behaviours and to modify existing ones. Food encourages motivation to learn rather than fear or revolt.
Positive reinforcement is one of the four quadrants of learning theory. It is the most ethical, effective and fun way to teach your dog a new trick or modify behaviour.
Learning theory (it’s actually not a theory, it’s science) is divided into four quadrants:
We LOVE positive reinforcement for a number of reasons:
1) It focuses on behaviour modification not suppression
2) It builds your relationship with your dog rather than erode it
3) It is fun and effective
4) It sets your dog up for success
6) It uses cues which invite cooperation rather than commands which invite resistance.
7) It does not use 'No' or other corrections which create frustration. Setting up your dog for success and being able to say 'yes' invites understanding
8) Positive reinforcement invites confidence. It does not use punishment or corrections which invite self defence or escape.
10) Encouragement (as opposed to confrontation) invites enthusiasm.
